The incident sparked a major political conflict, with the BJP claiming that the ruling Congress in Punjab "attempted to physically harm" the prime minister, while other parties also attacked the state government over the issue of law and order.

On the defensive, Punjab's chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi denied at a press conference that there was a security lapse or political motive behind it and said his government was ready for an investigation .
