Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran is to marry Kerala MLA KM Sachin Dev. The couple has yet to announce their wedding date.
Arya Rajendran, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), was appointed mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, in 2020, when she was 21 years old. She became India's youngest mayor.
Sachin, who is also associated with CPI(M), is one of the youngest members of the Kerala assembly, according to The Hindu. He is an MLA from Balussery.
Arya and Sachin have known each other since their days as activists of the Students Federation of India, the student wing of CPI(M). Arya had campaigned for Sachin ahead of Kerala assembly elections in 2021, The Hindu reported.
The two eventually decided to get married and informed their families and party about the decision.
"When the discussion (of marriage) broke out between us, we immediately reported it to the family and the party," Arya said as quoted by The Times of India. "As people's representatives, we believe it is appropriate to inform the party and our families before different types of rumors spread."
During a press conference on Wednesday, Arya said it was important to marry someone who shares the same political beliefs.
The mayor told the media that the wedding date has not yet been decided.
"Marriage is not the last word... It is something that needs to be deliberated," she said, according to The Times of India. "The families have to decide on a suitable date," she said, adding, "The party has to decide and propose." "There are personal matters to considered, including study. The timing of the wedding will be decided later."
Arya was studying mathematics at All Saints' College, Thiruvananthapuram when she was appointed the mayor. The young leader said that, she wanted to balance her academics and political career.
