During the meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the United States attacked Russia for recognizing the independence of two Ukrainian rebel territories, calling it "a manifest attack on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, to "create a pretext for a further invasion of Ukraine.
The US representative said at the UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine: “Russia's overt attack on Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty is unprovoked. This is an attack on Ukraine's status as a UN member state. This violates fundamental principles of international law. Russian President Putin is clearly behind Russia's attempt to create a pretext for further invasion of Ukraine."
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday morning recognized the independence of two separatist regions of Ukraine, Donetsk and Lugansk. After his televised address to the nation, Putin also formally signed friendship and aid agreements with Ukraine's Russian-backed separatist leaders.
The announcement comes after Putin convened an emergency meeting of the Russian Security Council during which he discussed recognizing the 'independence' of the Russian-backed separatist regions in eastern Ukraine. .
Following Putin's statement, Ukrainian President Zelensky called a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. In a tweet, Zelensky said: "Given the statements made at the meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I held urgent consultations with Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz and convened the national Security and Defense and Defence Council."
