A company called Flowcopter is building the world's first hydraulic motor drone that could use a high-density power source like gasoline instead of low-density lithium batteries.
The UK-based company is replacing batteries and electric motors with fuel pumps and motors that deliver a range of hundreds of miles and flight times lasting hours, Gizmodo reported.
Flowcopter's long-range heavy-lift drones are being developed to help helicopter operators optimize cargo, survey, and search and rescue operations.
The heavy-lift drones would use aviation-certified combustion engines powering digital displacement pumps, designed for harsh environments, which will provide control bandwidth to fly.

Flowcopter claims its drone could stay in the air without refueling for up to six hours and fly distances of up to 900 kilometers. The shorter flights could facilitate payloads of up to 150kg, making the drone a more capable short-range autonomous delivery vehicle that doesn't have to deal with traffic or long charging times between flights.
As we see in the video, Flowcopter has built a much more rudimentary prototype that performs tethered flight testing. whatever it looks like, it seems to lift off the ground. Although it looks relatively unstable, it's an impressive proof of concept, and it will improve as more advanced construction materials are incorporated into the overall design.
"This product will provide a step change in the capabilities of today's heavy-lift drones in terms of ruggedness, range, and payload," the company mentions on its website.
According to Flowcopter, the drones are capable of lifting more payload than electric drones and can fly longer based on rugged all-terrain vehicle technology without high voltage, they can be easily and safely maintained without specialist facilities.
