Bhopal: The Income Tax Department on Friday raided the home and properties of liquor businessman Shankar Rai and his family in Damoh on Friday and confiscated Rs 8 crore in cash and 3 kilograms of Gold. Interestingly, the notes were seen hidden in a bag kept in an underground water tank. A video emerged on social media showing IT officials drying currency notes using an iron and hairdryer.
“The income tax department seized 8 crore rupees in cash from the Rai family, which also included a bag containing 1 crore rupee in cash placed in a water container. In addition, three kilograms of gold were also confiscated, "said Munmun Sharma, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Department, Jabalpur, who led the IT raid.

After the operation ended, the Joint Commissioner said: "The physical raid has ended and this investigation will continue on the basis of documents seized from the Rai family to be carried out in Bhopal," Sharma added. “The department will now investigate the seized documents and unidentified properties. We will therefore have to wait for the final figure, ”said The Joint Commissioner.

The raid that began at 6 am on Thursday continued for 39 hours. Finance officials raided more than ten locations belonging to Shankar Rai's family. Businessman Shankar Rai is a congress leader and former Municipality President, while his brother Kamal Rai is a BJP leader, who served as Municipality Vice President.
“In addition to the liquor business, the Rai family also has a money lending business as well as transportation, hotels, bars and petrol pump,” said Munmun Sharma.
