The Omicron cases in India stands at 1,700; Maharashtra most affected, here's the state break

New Delhi: So far, a total of 1,700 cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus have been detected in 23 states and Union Territories, of which 639 have been recovered or migrated, according to data from the Union health ministry updated on Monday.

Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of 510 cases, followed by Delhi (351), Kerala (156), Gujarat (136), Tamil Nadu (121) and Rajasthan (120). The number of Covid in India rose to 3,49 22,882 with 33,750 new cases, while active cases rose to 1,45,582, according to data updated at 8 am.

The death toll rose to 4,813,893 with an additional 123 deaths, the data showed. Active cases rose to 1,45,582, representing 0.42% of total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.20%, the health ministry said.

The number of active COVID-19 cases increased by 22,781 cases in 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 3.84 percent, while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 1.68 percent, according to the health ministry.

The number of people cured of the disease rose to 3,42,95,407, while the death rate was recorded at 1.38%. The cumulative doses administered in the country so far as part of the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign have exceeded 145.68 crore.

The number of COVID-19 in India had crossed the 20 lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went from 60 lakh on September 28 to 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and crossed the 1 crore mark on December 19.

India crossed the grim milestone of two crore mark on May 4 and three crore on June 23. The 123 new deaths include 78 from Kerala and nine from Maharashtra.

A total of 4,813,893 deaths have been reported in the country to date, including 1,41,542 from Maharashtra, 48,113 from Kerala, 38,346 from Karnataka, 36,790 from Tamil Nadu, 25,109 from Delhi, 22,916 from Uttar Pradesh and 19,781 West Bengal.

The health ministry pointed out that more than 70 percent of deaths are due to comorbidities. "Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council for Medical Research," the ministry said on its website, adding that the distribution of the figures by the state was subject to further verification and reconciliation.
